MOUNTAIN BIKE

Cycling is a great way to keep fit and it’s  also a fun, eco-friendly, cheap mode of transport.

Bicycles take many forms but the utility bicycle would have to be the most common type, with millions of people worldwide relying on them for their transportation needs.

Utility bicycles outnumber cars and motorbikes in many cities around the world, especially in developing countries. Utility bicycles are designed with comfort, price and maneuverability in mind.

In the developed world, bicycles are used more for recreational purposes and as a means to keep fit. Recreational bicycles include road racing bikes, BMX bikes, and mountain bikes. The former (racing bikes) are designed with speed in mind, helped in this regard with drop handlebars, a short wheelbase and thin wheels.

Bicycles vary in price depending on quality and a number of other factors. The mountain bike seems to be the most popular bike for recreational riders due to its versatility.

An urban mountain bike, with no gears, can be picked up for between 50-100 GBP. Expect to pay 100-200 GBP for a reasonable quality mountain bike, with gears. Children’s bikes are often cheaper than adult's bikes.

Some high-end bicycles, made of advanced carbon-composite frames, can cost upwards of 2000 GBP. When buying a bicycle it is recommended that you set yourself a budget before looking around.

Also, before purchasing, ask to be measured up so that you get a suitably sized frame. Taking the bike for a test ride/drive is also extremely important.

Ok, you’ve picked out your bike and now you want to accessorize. You’ll find a whole host of bicycle accessories available to customise your bike to your specific requirements.

A water bottle & cage is vital accessory for all riders. If you are on a long ride, and have no access to water, dehydration can be a real concern, so remember to bottle-up before you hit the roads.

If you intend on doing any long distance rides you will require something to hold all your gear, panniers are a great cycle storage solution.

Essential cycling accessories to be legal, safe and seen are as follows: A high quality (BS approved) cycling helmet, cycle lights (LED cycle lights are the best), and reflective bicycle clothing.
